Sling TV Reaches 2.44 Million Subscribers

DISH reported its Q2 earnings today, including subscriber numbers for Sling TV. The streaming service added 65,000 subscribers in the second quarter, bringing the total number of subscribers to 2.44 million.

The increase in subscribers comes after a subscriber loss in Q1 2021, following a price hike that brought the monthly cost of Sling Orange and Sling Blue to $35, up from $30.

In an SEC filing released today, DISH notes that the increase in numbers for Q2 “was primarily related to higher Sling TV subscriber activations and lower subscriber disconnects resulting from our emphasis on improved streaming performance and enhanced customer segmentation and targeting, leading to the acquisition and retention of more high quality subscribers.”

“We continue to experience increased competition, including competition from other subscription video on-demand and live-linear OTT service providers.  The three months ended June 30, 2020 was negatively impacted by delays and cancellations of sporting events as a result of COVID-19,” the filing says.

Sling TV is holding the number three spot for live TV streaming services. Hulu still tops the list with 3.8 million subscribers as of May 2021. YouTube TV’s most recent subscriber count was 3 million in Q3 2020.
