In a significant shift in the streaming landscape, major live TV streaming services like Sling TV, Philo, Fubo, and DIRECTV STREAM are now offering free ad-supported channels to attract new subscribers. This trend reflects a growing recognition of the power of free content to entice viewers and potentially convert them into paying customers.
Free Tiers and Expanded Offerings
These services have introduced free tiers or expanded their existing free offerings, providing access to a selection of live TV channels without requiring a paid subscription. This strategy allows viewers to experience the platform’s interface, channel lineup, and features before committing to a monthly payment.
But Why?
It seems these services are hoping to do two things. First, expand their ad revenue by offering ad-supported free content. Second, to try and keep current customers using their apps after they leave the paid service, hoping they will someday return to begin paying customers at a later date.
The hope is if you are using their app still when you want a paid channel like ESPN you will be more likely to use their service vs some other service out there.
Sling Freestream
Sling TV’s free service, Sling Freestream, offers over 210 channels and 41,000 on-demand titles. This includes a mix of news, entertainment, and lifestyle channels, providing a taste of Sling TV’s broader offering.
Philo’s Free Channels
Philo recently launched a free tier with access to over 100 channels, showcasing a selection of its popular entertainment and lifestyle programming.
Fubo’s Free Tier
Fubo has also joined the fray with a free tier that includes a limited selection of live channels, primarily focused on news and entertainment.
DIRECTV’s Free Streaming Service
DIRECTV offers a free streaming service called MyFree DIRECTV, which provides access to a variety of FAST channels, including news, movies, and entertainment programming.
The Future of Streaming
This trend towards free ad-supported streaming could significantly impact the streaming landscape. As competition intensifies, offering free content may become an increasingly important strategy for attracting and retaining viewers. This could lead to a more diverse and accessible streaming ecosystem, with a wider range of options for viewers to choose from.
