Now we are getting fresh data and a look into the live TV streaming subscriber numbers. This week Comscore released new numbers for streaming media. It’s no surprise that Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Amazon account for 80% of all streaming. The real interesting numbers came from the live TV streaming world. What is interesting is when looking at hours watched on average Hulu leads the big four. So it seems Hulu subscribers really like the content on Hulu.
According to Comscore Sling TV is now in over 2 million US homes. That would put Sling TV’s subscriber growth well ahead of forecasts that said it would hit 2 million late this year.
The other interesting detail is that although Sling TV has the most subscribers of any live TV streaming service it is not the most watched. When looking at just hours streamed, DIRECTV NOW is the most watched live TV streaming service. DIRECTV Now subscribers average 81 viewing hours per month, while Sling subscribers average 69 hours, and PlayStation Vue subscribers average 57 hours.
It’s hard to say why DIRECTV NOW has such a large lead when it comes to hours streamed. Likely though it comes from being so new on many players.
For now what is clear is that the live TV streaming market and streaming overall are in flux. The real winners likely won’t be known for a few years. Will Sling TV stay on top? Will Hulu keep growing? We will have to wait and see.
