Family Watching Television Together Arguing Over Remote

Family Watching Television Together Arguing Over RemoteFor the first time ever Sling TV announced subscriber numbers this week. Previously Dish had pooled Sling TV subscriber numbers with their Dish numbers. Now we get our first look into the growth of Sling TV.

In total Sling TV ended 2017 with just over 2.2 million subscribers after adding 711,000 subscribers that year. In 2016 Sling TV added 878,000 subscribers, and in 2015 Sling TV added 526,000 subscribers.

While in 2017 Sling TV’s growth was slow, it is important to remember 711,000 new subscribers is more than most live TV streaming services currently have.

It is also impressive to note that with a flood of new services in 2017 Sling TV still saw strong grow. In late 2016, DIRECTV NOW launched just as 2017 was about to start. During 2017, Hulu, Philo, and YouTube TV all launched. Add in PlayStation Vue, fuboTV, and a host of other smaller options and you can see Sling TV is facing strong new competition.

Going even deeper you have services like DIRECTV NOW pouring money into accruing as many subscribers as they can possibly get.

The real question now is what will happen in 2018. There are still a few more live TV streaming services rumored to be launching, and they will bring even more competition into the live TV market. How Sling TV will end 2018 will give a good idea of how Sling TV will stack up against their competition in three to five years.

So how do you thinking Sling TV will do in 2018? Will they continue their leadership? Or will other live TV streaming services catch up? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
