After DIRECTV NOW reported it had lost over 168,000 subscribers many wondered if Sling TV would also lose subscribers. Today we learned that Sling TV gained 48,000 subscribers and now has over 2.47 million subscribers. This is up from the 2.424 million subscribers Sling TV had in the 1st quarter of 2019. This means Sling TV is still the largest live TV streaming services in the United States.

Overall Dish lost 79,000 TV subscribers down considerably from the 259,000 subscribers Dish lost in the 1st quarter of 2019. Over Dish only lost 31,000 TV subscribers making

Here are some highlights from Dish’s earnings:

  • Revenue of $3.211 billion
  • Net income attributable to DISH Network of $317 million and basic and diluted earnings per share of common stock of $0.68 and $0.60, respectively
  • Loss of approximately 31,000 net Pay-TV subscribers
  • Loss of approximately 79,000 net DISH TV subscribers
  • Addition of approximately 48,000 net Sling TV subscribers
  • Pay-TV ARPU of $86.34
  • Gross new DISH TV subscriber activations of approximately 348,000
  • DISH TV churn rate of 1.48%
  • DISH TV SAC of $786

Later today Dish will hold their earnings call that should give us more insight into the future of Dish and Sling TV. Here are two things you should keep an eye out for during Dish’s 2nd quarter 2019 earnings call:

Sling Wireless

Last week we learned that DISH had agreed to buy Boost Mobile and additional assets from T-Mobile as part of the spring merger. DISH had already been working on its own wireless network and owns a large catalog of spectrum it plans to use. This deal with T-Mobile will likely help DISH speed up launching its own network and makes DISH the fourth-largest wireless provider in the United States.

In 2017, as DISH was starting to build up its wireless efforts, DISH registered SlingWireless.com hinting that it plans to use the Sling TV brand to launch its wireless phone service.

Keep an ear open during DISH’s earnings call for any news about Sling Wireless and any possible efforts to use Sling TV subscribers to grow Sling Wireless. (It could be way too early for them to get into any details beyond confirming the Sling Wireless name.)

5G

DISH is about a year away from launching its first wireless Internet of things wireless network. Now it’s being reported that with this T-Mobile deal DISH may have a 5G network live as soon as the end of 2020. Keep your ears open for any news of DISH’s plans to use 5G with other services like Sling TV.

We will have full coverage of Dish’s 2nd quarter earnings as soon as they are officially posted.

Update: Sling TV confirms that they have gained 48,000 subscribers not 43,000.
