Update: A early version of this story suggested that this is the second time RCN raised rates this year. RCN only raised rates once this year and it happened in January.
RCN, the tenth largest cable provider in the United States, recently announced it will be increasing cable rates once again. (So its 3.8 million subscribers will see rates going up on the most popular packages.)
If you have RCN’s most popular TV package, the Signature Digital TV plan, you will see a rate hike of $5 to $98.50 a month. That means over the year you will pay an extra $60, or over the life of a 2-year contract you will pay an extra $120.
It is also raising fees because its broadcast TV surcharge is going up an extra $1.25 a month. The sports fee is increasing by $2.25 a month, and the entertainment network fee is going up by $2.50 a month. So that is an extra $6 a month you will pay in fees.
But RCN is not done because cable rental fees on some equipment will also increase by $3 a month. In total, with the price hike and newly raised fees, you will pay an extra $14 a month and over a year you will pay an extra $168. Again over a 2-year contract you will pay an extra $336.
So if you have a friend still paying for cable TV make sure to tell them to double check their bills because they are likely paying more than they did just a few weeks ago.
