Say Goodbye to Chromecast Built-In & Hello to Google Cast

This week Google has started to bring back the old Google Cast branding. Now you will see Google Cast as an option instead of the Chromecast Built-In branding when you see third-party TVs that support the Chromecast option.

With Chromecast you can cast video or audio from your phone, tablet, or PC to supported devices. This makes it easy to watch videos or TV shows from your phone on your TV, for example. Many TVs now come with it built in so do Google TV and Android TV devices. Until 2016 Chromecast was called Google Cast and now it seems that Google is switching the name back.

This was first spotted by 9to5Google who points out this is likely an effort to save the Chromecast name for official Chromecast devices not all the third-party devices they support.

This comes as rumors have been flying of a new Chromecast device coming soon with built-in Google TV. This move could be aimed at helping the new Chromecast model stand out from its competition.

Name changes like this are often slow but Google has officially announced the change on its site saying:

Casting is as simple as pressing a button from your favorite app. Watch your favorites on the TV while switching to another app. Listen to your top tunes while taking a phone call or sending a text, all without interrupting what’s playing on the speakers.

With Cast, your phone is your personalized remote control that you can use to browse, play, pause, and even make playlists.

You can cast from Android tablets and smartphones, iPhones, iPads, Mac, Windows and Chromebooks to your TV or speakers with Cast.
