A widespread software glitch affecting Roku’s voice search feature has left thousands of users unable to watch content without constant interruptions, turning what should be a seamless streaming experience into a cycle of repeated searches and restarts if they use the voice search.
The problem, which began surfacing in large numbers over the past week, affects a broad range of Roku devices including Roku TVs, Streaming Stick models, and Ultra players. When a user activates voice search on the remote or through the Roku mobile app and successfully locates a movie or TV show, playback begins normally. However, the moment the viewer attempts to adjust the volume their Roku returns to the Roku search results screen covering the movie or TV show. This forces the user to begin the search process all over again, creating a frustrating loop that renders normal viewing nearly impossible.
Affected customers first noticed the issue in the last few weeks. The issue has been replicated across popular services including Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, and Roku’s own free ad-supported channels.
Cord Cutters News has been flooded with reports of the issue and we have been able to repulcate it.
At present, the only reliable workaround requires a full restart of the Roku device. Users can accomplish this by navigating to Settings > System > Power > System Restart on devices that support it, or by unplugging the unit for ten seconds and plugging it back in. While this temporarily resolves the issue, the bug returns as soon as someone tries to use the voice search again.
Until an official patch arrives, many customers have resorted to disabling voice search entirely and relying on traditional text entry or channel-specific search functions within individual apps. Others have switched to alternative devices such as Fire TV, Apple TV, or built-in smart TV platforms to avoid the interruption cycle altogether.
The timing of the bug is particularly inconvenient as streaming demand traditionally spikes during the holiday season, with families gathering for movie nights and new releases drawing large audiences. For now risks losing viewer goodwill at a moment when smooth performance matters most.
As complaints continue to mount across social media and support channels, pressure is growing for Roku to expedite a solution before the issue impacts a larger portion of its estimated millions of active accounts worldwide.
