Roku has quietly started rolling out its Roku OS 14.5 update to a small group of test users as of March 28, 2025, at 7:53 a.m. EDT, according to reports circulating among the streaming community. While Roku has not officially announced the update, sources indicate that this initial phase targets a select number of users to identify early bugs and performance issues before a wider release. The move comes on the heels of a developer-focused event on March 24, where Roku teased the update, though specifics for general users remain thin, leaving many of Roku’s 90 million active account holders (Q4 2024) eager for more clarity.

Roku developers have had the beta version of Roku 14.5 since January, but now it seems that Roku has started to roll it out to select Roku owners, as confirmed by multiple Cord Cutters News readers. For now, the changes seem to be mostly under the hood with bug fixes, as Roku typically hides most of the user-facing updates until an update is fully rolling out.

So far, the details announced are just for developers, but here is what Roku is telling developers publicly.

Details of Roku OS 14.5’s consumer-facing changes are not yet public, as Roku has not released an official changelog. However, beta notes shared with developer partners under non-disclosure agreements (NDAs)—previously reported by Cord Cutters News—shed light on key updates aimed at developers, hinting at broader system improvements. The update introduces Roku Resource Monitor 4.0 (RRM 4.0), which offers UI enhancements like the ability to disable specific metric panels for channel monitoring, auto-saving view configurations, and consolidating BrightScript Objects into a single graph with memory usage breakdowns. It also breaks out SceneGraph metrics by node type and allows developers to drill into source code tied to rendezvous events, streamlining debugging.

The BrightScript Profiler in OS 14.5 promises better performance, using less CPU and memory for longer sessions, while media playback sees a tweak with the drmParams parameter now supporting Harmonic/DTV-GO DASH-IOP v5.0.0 streams via a new ignoreInitDataPssh attribute. A significant shift is the sunsetting of Roku SceneGraph (RSG) 1.1 apps—developers must now migrate to RSG 1.2, as apps with “rsg_version=1.1” in their manifest will be treated as 1.2, potentially breaking functionality if not updated. This follows the deprecation of the eval() function in Roku OS 9.0 (2019) and its removal in OS 9.3, a long-planned transition to optimize load times and memory usage.

The limited rollout follows Roku’s pattern of cautious updates—OS 14.1 in January focused on bug fixes, while OS 14.0 last year added a Kids & Family hub and enhanced Roku Voice features. Posts on X reflect cautious optimism: users hope for UI and performance boosts teased at the developer event, but some worry about bugs, citing past issues like the HDMI 1 rename prompt fixed earlier this month. With streaming at 43.5% of U.S. TV viewing (February 2025), For now, most users await a broader rollout, with no timeline announced, as Roku refines OS 14.5 behind the scenes.

Sadly, you can not force the update if Roku has not selected your device to get 14.5. You will just need to wait.
