Roku Stick 2017 2

Yesterday it was reported that Roku has been working with content producers to create exclusive programming for the Roku Channel. This comes from a Digiday report that says Roku is looking to take on Amazon and Netflix by launching their own original programming.

Is Roku really doing this? Roku PR has stated that they are not working on this, but Digiday stands firm that their sources have confirmed that Roku is in talks with content creators for exclusive rights.

It is possible that Roku is in talks for exclusive content but not originals. Roku may be working on getting rights to already created content exclusively for the Roku Channel. We will have to wait and see.

What we can confirm is that Roku is working hard to get more content to the Roku Channel. Recently Roku partnered with Pluto TV and its parent company ViacomCBS to bring Pluto TV content to the Roku Channel. I would look for Roku to strike more deals like this going forward.

Clearly the Roku Channel is a huge part of Roku’s strategy going forward. The question now is how big will it get.
