Roku has solidified its dominance in the streaming device market, emerging as the top choice among cord cutters in a recent survey of over 1,900 readers conducted by Cord Cutters News. The survey, which allowed participants to select all devices used in their households, revealed that 64% of respondents use a Roku, surpassing the combined usage of Fire TV (32.5%) and Apple TV (18.4%), which together account for 50.9%. The findings highlight Roku’s stronghold in a landscape where streaming accounts for 43.5% of U.S. TV viewing (February 2025), even as competitors like Hisense-Fire TV launch new models.
The survey’s methodology—permitting multiple device selections—reflects the reality of modern households, where many use a mix of streaming players, leading to totals exceeding 100%. Laptops and PCs ranked third at 28.9%, while Chromecast and Google TV trailed at 10.8%, underscoring Roku’s lead in a fragmented market.
Roku’s appeal lies in its simplicity and affordability—devices like the Roku Streaming Stick 4K ($49) offer 4K, HDR, and a vast app library, outshining Fire TV’s Alexa-heavy ecosystem and Apple TV’s pricier $129 4K model, which caters to Apple loyalists. Fire TV, at 32.5%, benefits from Amazon’s ecosystem and powerful devices at an affordable price. Apple TV’s 18.4% reflects its premium niche—tight iOS integration but a higher cost that limits mass appeal, as noted in Cord Cutters News’ 2024 Cordie Awards, where Roku also won with 51.7%. Chromecast and Google TV’s 10.8% shows growth, yet struggles with market penetration, per the survey.
Roku’s 90 million active accounts (Q4 2024) face a challenge: as users hold onto older devices, growth may hinge on ad-supported content, a pivot Roku and Amazon have already embraced as both have been testing or launched full-screen video ads on their home screen. For now though at least with cord cutters it seems Roku has found a recipe that works to attract streamers looking to replace cable TV.
