Roku Had Leaked Max’s Rebrand Back to HBO Max Months Ago & We All Just Missed It

In a move that surprised few but delighted many, Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced today that its streaming service, Max, will revert to its original name, HBO Max, this summer. The decision, revealed at the company’s Upfront presentation at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, confirms a shift that was inadvertently leaked months ago through Roku and Amazon, sparking speculation among industry watchers and subscribers alike.

The first hints of the name change emerged late last year when Roku, a leading streaming platform, accidentally included references to “HBO Max” on its new pro remote despite the service being officially branded as Max since May 2023. Cord Cutters News saw it but had assumed it was a mistake as it was the services old name and posted about it on March 10th 2025.

Here is our Facebook post from March 10th 2025:

Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to restore the HBO Max name comes two years after the controversial rebrand to Max, a move led by CEO David Zaslav to broaden the platform’s appeal by integrating Discovery+ content and de-emphasizing HBO’s prestige branding. The 2023 rename was met with criticism, as many felt the HBO name—synonymous with high-quality programming like The Sopranos and Succession—was a valuable asset.

The leaks from Roku and Amazon, now clearly premature, align with Warner Bros. Discovery’s strategic pivot. “The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming,” Zaslav said in a press release, emphasizing HBO’s “longtime reputation” as a cornerstone of the rebrand. The company aims to capitalize on HBO’s brand equity to drive subscriber growth, especially as it faces competitive pressures in the streaming market.

The rebrand to HBO Max will roll out this summer, with updates to the app’s logo and interface. Existing Max subscribers will see their accounts transition seamlessly. For now, the HBO Max name is back, and what began as a curious leak has culminated in a full-circle return to a beloved brand.
