Roku users are grappling with a frustrating new bug impacting Roku TVs, where a menu prompt to rename the device connected to the HDMI 1 port appears every time the TV starts up, as reported by users on community forums and confirmed by Rokuin posts online. The issue, which began surfacing earlier this week, affects a wide range of Roku TV models and has sparked widespread annoyance among owners who often use HDMI 1 for devices like gaming consoles, cable boxes, or HDMI switches. Roku has acknowledged the glitch and assured customers that a fix is actively being developed, though no specific timeline for the update has been provided.

The bug forces users to either rename their HDMI 1 device—often misidentified as a single device like a “Nintendo Switch” or “PlayStation 4” even when multiple devices share the port via a switch—or cancel the prompt, only for it to reappear on the next startup. Community posts dating back to 2021 highlight similar issues with Roku OS renaming HDMI inputs, often tied to the “Game Mode” feature introduced in OS 10.0, but this new bug’s persistence on every boot marks a significant escalation.

The company advised users to restart their TVs (Settings > System > Power > Restart) as a temporary workaround, though forum replies indicate this rarely helps. The root cause appears tied to Roku OS’s automatic device detection, a feature meant to streamline setup but now misfiring.

For now, users can just quickly close the menu that opens when they start the TV. No timeline has been announced for when this will be fixed.
