When Quibi made its debut earlier this month, the biggest question seemed to be whether people were willing to add another paid service to their lineup.
We don’t have a solid answer to that yet because people are still in their (far longer than industry usual) 90-day free trial, but if early signups are any indication, Quibi will be just fine.
The service announced this week that they had amassed 2.7 million downloads to date, less than three weeks after rollout. 1.7 million people downloaded the app in its first week alone.
Quibi also announced that support for watching on television would be added soon, backtracking on their “mobile-only” stance that the service was initially built around.
A surprising amount of top name stars have signed on to produce content for Quibi, including Steven Spielberg, Bill Murray, LeBron James, Reese Witherspoon, and more. Everything on the platform is original, and it’s all in 10 minute “quick bite” episodes (hence the Quibi name).
So far, the most popular content has been:
- Most Dangerous Game (a film starring Liam Hemsworth as a man with a terminal disease who agrees to be hunted for sport in return for millions)
- Chrissy’s Court (a courtroom show where Chrissy Teigen serves as a small claims court judge)
- Flipped (a comedy where a pair of home renovation experts are kidnapped by the cartel and forced to renovate homes
- Punk’d (a reboot of the famous prank show, only this time Chance the Rapper hosts)
- Survive (a drama where a group of plane crash survivors must now survive horrific conditions in a frozen landscape)
A Quibi subscription costs $4.99 a month after the free trial for the ad-supported version and $7.99 a month for the ad-free version.
