So What Are The Most Popular Cord Cutting Services? We Asked Our Readers

You will often see cord cutters argue about what is the best cord cutting service. We already looked at the most popular live TV service such as Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, and DIRECTV NOW. This time we are looking at the rest of the services out there. (You can find the breakdown of the big three live TV streaming services HERE.)

This week we surveyed more than 1,000 of our readers, and from that sample we came up with this list.

The following are the top 10 cord cutting services:

  1. Netflix: 77.3%
  2. Amazon Video: 73%
  3. YouTube: 46.8%
  4. Hulu: 40.5%
  5. WatchESPN: 23.3%
  6. CBS All Access: 12.2%
  7. Google Play: 12.2%
  8. HBO NOW: 9.9%
  9. iTunes: 9.1%
  10. Showtime Anytime: 7.2%

A few things jump out to us from the rankings. First is the big gaps between services. Netflix and Amazon are both in the 70% range but YouTube drops all the way down to 46.8%. The next big jump comes between numbers 4 and 5. Hulu is at 40.5%, but WatchESPN is down at 23.3%.

I was also shocked to see iTunes down in ninth just below 10% and behind HBO NOW; however, it may have to do with the low device support and, until recently, very tough rental limitations.

Final Thoughts

Often people ask what service is right for cord cutters, but that probably is the wrong question. You should ask what is the right service for you. Every service offers something different, and they almost all offer a free trial. So take the time to test them out and get the service you enjoy.
