Pluto TV, the leading free ad-supported streaming television service, is thrilled to announce the return of its acclaimed Free Movie Weekend program this summer, aimed at supporting family-run and independent theaters nationwide. This year, the initiative gains a powerful ally in Oscar-winning filmmaker Sean Baker, whose passion for independent cinema and the theatrical experience aligns perfectly with Pluto TV’s mission to make movies accessible while celebrating the cultural significance of local theaters.

Launched in 2021, Free Movie Weekend was created to revitalize communities and cinemas hit hard by pandemic-related closures. By offering free movie tickets on select weekends, the program encourages audiences to rediscover the magic of the big screen. Now in its fifth season, the initiative has hosted 50 free weekends across 30 states, becoming a nationwide celebration of cinema. This summer, the program takes a bold step forward with Baker’s involvement, marking the first time a filmmaker has formally partnered with Pluto TV to amplify its impact.

Sean Baker, fresh off his 2025 Academy Award wins for Anora, has long championed independent theaters as vital cultural hubs. During his Oscar acceptance speech, he emphasized the importance of the theatrical experience, a sentiment that resonates deeply with Free Movie Weekend. Baker’s partnership includes nominating a local theater for sponsorship, spotlighting venues that embody the spirit of community-driven cinema. His first pick is Gardena Cinema, a historic single-screen theater in South Los Angeles. Built in 1946 and operated by the Kim family since 1976, Gardena Cinema is now managed by Judy Kim, who continues her family’s legacy after the passing of her mother, Nancy Soo Myoung Kim, in 2022.

“Free Movie Weekend is a meaningful initiative that shares a cause close to my heart. Local cinemas are cultural touchstones, they are gathering places where communities come together to experience stories as they were meant to be seen: on the big screen,” said Anora filmmaker Sean Baker.  “I’m honored to partner with Pluto TV to help spotlight the independent theaters that play such a vital role in sustaining the art of cinema.”

This year’s Free Movie Weekend will feature free screenings at the following theaters:

  • Gardena Cinema – Los Angeles, CA: June 7-8
  • Tara Theater – Atlanta, GA: June 14-15
  • The Music Box Theatre – Chicago, IL: June 21-22
  • The Redford Theater – Detroit, MI: June 28-29
  • The Colonial Theatre – Phoenixville, PA: July 5-6

These weekends offer audiences a chance to enjoy films at no cost, boosting attendance and supporting theaters facing ongoing challenges. Pluto TV’s commitment to the theatrical experience complements its streaming platform, reinforcing the idea that cinema—whether on the big screen or at home—remains a powerful storytelling medium.

In tandem with Free Movie Weekend, Pluto TV is launching its Summer of Cinema programming event, running through June, July, and August. The initiative features a robust lineup of blockbuster films and franchises, including Mission: Impossible, Indiana Jones, Terminator, Star Trek, Interstellar, and The Wolf of Wall Street, all available for free on the platform. This dual approach—supporting theaters while offering premium streaming content—underscores Pluto TV’s dedication to making great stories accessible to all.

By partnering with Sean Baker and championing independent theaters, Pluto TV is not only preserving the theatrical experience but also fostering a deeper connection between audiences and the art of cinema. As Free Movie Weekend rolls out this summer, it promises to be a celebration of storytelling, community, and the enduring magic of the movies.
