Pluto TV, the popular free, ad-supported streaming service, has sparked curiosity and mild frustration among its user base after rolling out a new test warning on its login screen you see when you open the app. For a short time Pluto TV warned that customers who don’t create an account would only get “Limited Viewing” vs ones who created an account or logged in.

The change, spotted by eagle-eyed viewers in recent weeks, marks a shift from the platform’s previous “sign up or not now” prompt to a more assertive message implying restricted access for those who opt not to log in. However, in a statement to Cord Cutters News, Pluto TV confirmed that while the language was briefly used on its apps, the viewing experience itself remains unchanged and customers who don’t create an account still get full access to Pluto TV.

The updated login page, which greets users upon opening the app, now cautions that failing to sign up or log in will result in “Limited Viewing.” This phrasing suggests a potential cap on content access, a move that could alarm fans of the service known for its no-cost, no-strings-attached model. But Pluto TV was quick to clarify that the tweak is purely experimental. The change, though, left many worried that if they didn’t make an account, they would find themselves missing out on some of Pluto TV’s content. yet Pluto TV says users who bypass the login prompt can still enjoy the full slate of Pluto TV’s offerings—hundreds of live channels and on-demand titles—without restriction.

For now, Pluto TV says they have removed the “Limited Viewing” language from their app and returned to the original option to say Not Yet when asked to log in.

The test comes as streaming platforms across the industry grapple with balancing user acquisition and engagement in an increasingly competitive market. For Pluto TV, which has carved out a niche by offering free access supported by ads, encouraging account creation could unlock valuable user data, enabling more personalized content recommendations and targeted advertising—a boon for both the platform and its partners. Yet the move has raised eyebrows among longtime users accustomed to its hassle-free approach.

Creating a free account on Pluto TV has many benefits, including the ability to have a unified experience across multiple devices. With an account, you can favorite channels and even resume watching on-demand content from where you left off, no matter if it was on your phone or TV. Pluto TV is clear that they will remain free, but at the same time, it seems like they wish more of their customers would create an account on the app.
