Girl watching TV

Girl watching TVThis morning, DISH shared subscriber numbers for Sling TV, showing that the live TV streaming service has lost subscribers for the first time. Sling TV is now at 2.59 million subscribers.

In the most recent Disney earnings call, we found out that Hulu with Live has reached 3.2 million subscribers. Recently, we also learned that YouTube TV has grown to over 2 million subscribers.

One major change in cord cutting has contributed to the growth of both Hulu with Live and YouTube TV – the shutdown of PlayStation Vue. When that service shut down at the end of January, subscribers who were still interested in streaming live TV had to find an alternative source. Most made the switch to Hulu or YouTube TV, but not many found what they were looking for with Sling TV.

This lines up with our reader survey back in November 2019, where we asked PlayStation Vue subscribers which service they would be switching to. The overwhelming response was YouTube TV, followed by Hulu with Live.

Readers on Cord Cutters News, along with former PlayStation Vue subscribers on social media, have commented that it was YouTube TV’s channel lineup, DVR feature, and overall user experience that convinced them to make the switch. Many felt that YouTube TV most closely line up with their PlayStation Vue experience

Will Sling TV be able to come back from their subscriber loss and maintain their second place position as Hulu and YouTube TV continue to grow? We’ll be keeping an eye on subscriber numbers to find out.
