Group of young people watching soccer matchPhilo has been proudly advertising themselves as a sports-free streaming service. Now it looks like they are open to the idea of adding sports.

This week Andrew McCollum, the CEO of Philo, held an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit. During the AMA he answered a few tough questions including the possibility of adding sports.

“We’re definitely looking at potentially adding other content verticals like sports and news through add-ons. Sports is definitely an area where fans are excited for those options, and if we can do it in a way that gives people flexibility, we’re very open to it. Of course, some of these options are already available to stream directly from the leagues,” said McCollum during the Reddit AMA.

What exactly that will look like is unknown, but it leaves open the possibility to have a sports add-on.

Many experts have wondered how Philo will succeed in the long run without sports and many news options, but it looks like Philo is open to adding them if the deal terms are right. Yet content owners have been unwilling to sell sports channels unless the service is willing to offer them in core packages and/or take a ton of other channels also owned by the parent company.

The good news for Philo is content owners seem far more willing to be flexible; however, they still seem far from willing to sell their sports channels without some very strict rules.
