NBCUniversal’s Peacock announced today that it has ordered two seasons of “Bel-Air,” the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reboot, after Netflix, HBO Max, and Peacock battled for rights of the new series.

The news was shared by Will Smith, who will be the executive producer of the show, on his YouTube channel this afternoon.

“We have just officially closed the deal with Peacock with an unprecedented 2 season order from a pitch. I’ve been in this business for 30 years and that does not happen,” Smith says in the video, sharing the news with showrunner, co-executive producer, and co-writer Chris Collins and co-executive producer Morgan Cooper.

Set in modern-day America, Bel-Air is a serialized one-hour dramatic analogue of the 90’s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” that leans into the original premise: Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. With a reimagined vision, Bel-Air will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show.
