For some time now, PBS has been saying they plan to increase their streaming support. You have been able to get national PBS and PBS Kids apps but now PBS has started to roll out local PBS apps on the Fire TV.
In select areas, like the Blue Ridge area of Virginia, PBS has started to roll out their own dedicated apps that include both national and local PBS content. These apps seem to include local content previously not included in the national PBS app.
Here is how the app from the Blue Ridge PBS is described:
Blue Ridge Streaming is preserving the cultural heritage of Southwest Virginia by telling stories for, by and about the people of the Roanoke and New River valleys. No matter where you live, Blue Ridge Streaming enriches the community through local productions, national programming, and educational initiatives. We are the window to the past, present, and future of Southwest Virginia.
The app will come with:
- Roanoke Virginia
- Blue Ridge PBS
- Public Broadcasting
- Cooking Cheap
- Southwest Virginia
- Local Flavor
- Local History
Hopefully, PBS continues to roll out new apps dedicated to local areas. Right now it looks like they are slowly rolling it our a few stations at a time.
