‘Outer Banks’ and ‘Cocomelon’ Were the Week’s Top Titles According to Nielsen’s Rankings

During the week of Aug. 16 – Aug. 22, no new big Originals or blockbuster movies were released on streaming, allowing Netflix’s Outer Banks to hold onto its top spot overall, although viewership was slightly down from the previous week at 736 million minutes.

Just like we began to see last week, young viewers age 6-17 being back to school had a noticeable effect on overall streaming minutes in general. Kids are back in the classroom and have homework at night, occupying more time among school-age viewers and even their parents. On the other hand, Cocomelon reached the No.2 spot since its core demographic is preschool age children. The learning and music series had nearly the viewership of Outer Banks, hitting 732 million.

Aside from Outer Banks, the most popular Originals of the week include Grace. and Frankie which had 716 million minutes of viewing time, followed by Hulu’s Original limited series Nine Perfect Strangers starring Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy. The 8-episode series only had 3 episodes released at that point, so the 420 million minutes streamed proves how in demand it is. On the contrast, Virgin River which came in fourth place has 30 episodes and generated 342 million minutes.

With Cocomelon leading the Acquired category, the popular Manifest on Netflix was second with 705 million minutes. The top ten list also included longtime favorites Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, NCIS, The Walking Dead, and more.

In Movies, Netflix and Disney bounced back and forth with the rankings, with Netflix’s Sweet Girl starring Jason Momoa in the top spot with 658 million minutes. In second place, Netflix’s Lini Manuel-Miranda -starring animated musical Vivo had 475 million, with another animated title in third place with Luca on Disney+.
