Older Verizon Unlimited Data Plans Get a Price Hike

Changes are coming to some of Verizon’s legacy plans, and no, it’s not a nifty new perk. Verizon is adding a $3 rate adjustment to select older Unlimited and Basic postpaid plans starting August 29.

Verizon confirmed its Go Unlimited 2.0, Beyond Unlimited 2.0, Above Unlimited, and 5G Start will cost an extra $3 per line. The Single Basic Phone plan will increase by $5 per line. A company spokesperson noted those plans are more than three years old.

Since Verizon’s price increase affects every line on an account, a family of four will see an additional $12 on their monthly bill. That’s an increase of $144 per year. And there’s no guarantee Verizon won’t raise costs again.

The price increase won’t affect Verizon customers who’ve already updated their accounts to newer Unlimited plans, or have the Do More, Play More, Get More or Start 2.0 plans. The changes also won’t include lines with tablets, smart watches, and other devices.

These changes mark the latest price increase as the wireless carriers have sought ways to raise fees to shore up their revenue. Even T-Mobile, which is prevented from raising rates, has found other ways to charge customers more.

“We encourage customers to move to the new Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Welcome plan at any time to take advantage of even more value and perks of their choice,” said a company spokesperson.

Prior to this change, Verizon’s Mix & Match 1.0 customers started seeing a $3 to $5 fee added to their bills starting July 27.  Verizon also bumped up the cost of home internet by $10 last spring.

Verizon recommends upgrading your account to the newer Unlimited plans before August 29. The Unlimited Welcome plan starts at $35 per line and comes with a Walmart+ Membership. Signing up for Unlimited Plus grants you access to Apple One, which includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud+, and Arcade. Unlimited Plus costs $40 per line.

Verizon also offers an Unlimited Plus plan for cinephiles which costs $50 per line. The plan includes a Disney bundle and 100 GB of mobile hotspot.

These plans are priced for new customers who bring their own phones and sign up for the Auto Pay discount. Taxes and fees are not included in these prices, so chat with Verizon’s customer service for a precise quote.
