No, Hackers Didn’t Break Into Your Amazon Account

A rumor that Amazon accounts had fallen prey to a hack has been proven to be untrue.

The rumor spread like wildfire on social media and claimed that bad actors had added more addresses to user accounts for Amazon Hub lockers. An investigation by fact-checking website Snopes found that social media users who shared the rumor incorrectly said the mailing addresses weren’t real lockers.

Porch pirates are always a threat, but the thieves can become more active during the holiday season when package deliveries can occur at a higher volume. Hub lockers can help curb this problem. The lockers are safe spaces to hold items instead of having your items delivered to your home. If you use one, Amazon provides a special code to open the locker and pick up your package after delivery.

If you see new Hub locations in your Amazon account, they were added by Amazon by mistake, according to Snopes.

“This isn’t a data security matter and our systems are secure,” Amazon told the fact-checking website. “Amazon pickup locations were added to a small number of customer accounts in error, and we are working to fix the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and customers with questions about their account are welcome to contact customer service.”

You can check to see if a hub location was added to your account by looking up Your Addresses in the Amazon app or online. If you want to add a hub location, go to Your Addresses and choose Add a New Pickup Location. Simply tap Remove to delete an address from your account.

Amazon wasn’t immediately available for further comment.
