Nielsen Is Now Measuring Netflix Viewers

Netflix is notorious for not divulging viewing statistics for many of their shows. To address this Nielsen is teaming up with select broadcasters to track the performance of their shows on video-on-demand services starting with Netflix.

Among these partners are A&E Networks, Disney/ABC, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros.

Now Nielsen will provide data comparable to what Nielsen provides for traditional live TV including ratings, reach, frequency, and demographics.

“We feel Netflix is a really important part of the ecosystem, particularly as we see some of these numbers and rankers,” said Brian Fuhrer, senior VP of product leadership at Nielsen.

This marks a massive shift in how content owners view video-on-demand services. In the past it was almost treated as an afterthought, but now it is becoming an increasingly important aspect of their growth.

Now companies such as NBCUniversal and Disney are hoping to learn more about who is watching what on Netflix in an effort to create more content that Netflix viewers want to see.

This will also help studios be better informed when selling programming to Netflix and other video-on-demand services.

Nielsen did not share when they plan to release their first Netflix numbers but soon we may get a better idea what viewers on Netflix are up to.
