NextGen TV ATSC 3.0 OTA TV Is Coming to Parts of Texas in February

KSAT, a local TV station in San Antonio, Texas, is set to broadcast a NextGen TV signal in February.

NextGen TV, also known as ATSC 3.0, represents a massive upgrade for over-the-air broadcast television. The standard improves picture and sound quality and brings interactive and personalized content, and possibly reduce or eliminate subscription costs by offering more free channels. In addition, NextGen TVs are upgradable to accommodate future features.

KSAT will offer at least five different channels including ABC, MeTV, Heros and Icons, Movies, and StartTV, according to the station.

This comes after NextGen TV launched in 12 new markets last year, including New York, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Miami. With the standard launching in Chicago this month, it’s expected to reach 75% of U.S. households, offering more than 80 channels like local news, sports, and entertainment.

To watch NextGen TV, you’ll need a compatible television set, a NextGen TV box, and an antenna. Retailers like LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony, and Hisense are already equipped to receive the standard, and more brands are set to join in the future. While internet access isn’t required, NextGen TV’s FAQ page does recommend a connection to get the most out of the standard’s features as well as software updates.
