Nexstar will air a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King starting January 13. The network will debut A Grandaughter’s Dream featuring Yolanda Renee King, the sole grandchild of the civil rights leaders and his wife.
The 30-minute special coincides with the national celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. Donna Terrell, a reporter for KLRT-TV in Little Rock, Arkansas, interviewed activist Yolanda Renne King and her mother, Arndrea Waters King, at Spelman College, a historically Black college attended by five generations of King women. In the interview, King speaks of her calling to fulfill her grandfather’s dreams and discusses the influence of two historical relatives she’s never met and the significance of their legacy.
At 15, King wrote We Dream a World: Carrying the Light From My Grandparents Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, a picture book published on January 2. She describes it as a “love letter” to her grandparents.
King gave the keynote speech at Clemson University’s 41st celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Day last year, speaking on topics including gun violence, ending homelessness, and her grandparents’ contributions to society.
“I feel that somehow, they are with me and that our spirits are joined in the quest for a just, loving, and peaceful world,” said King. “I am very proud to be their granddaughter, but I am also challenged by their inspiring legacy of vision, courage, and their competent leadership. And I know that I’m not alone.”
Along with the debut of A Grandaughter’s Dream, Nexstar Media Charitable Foundation will donate $10,000 to the Drum Major Institute to commemorate this year’s holiday and Dr. King’s legacy. Arndrea Waters King is the President of the Drum Major Institute, a non-profit community action advocacy group founded in 1961.
