Nexstar Media Group, the largest television station owner in the United States, is bringing back free local and live news to more markets with the launch of free streaming apps for its local news stations. These apps, currently being rolled out across Nexstar’s markets, provide viewers with access to live and on-demand local news content from their ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC affiliates, without the need for a paid subscription. This initiative aims to enhance access to local news and information, catering to the growing number of cord-cutters and those who prefer digital viewing experiences.
Originally Nexstar only offered the free live news option in a handful of major markets like Denver, Austin, Nashville, and many more. Now they have rolled our the free stream to most of its midsize and a few small markets. You can find all the apps now live from Nexstar on HERE.
This is a change of course for Nexstar, who a few years ago stopped offering free live news streams and and instead replaced it with on-demand clips from their local news programs. Now Nexstar is once again offering free live streams at least in some markets.
The new streaming apps offer a variety of features designed to keep viewers informed and engaged with their local communities. These include:
- Live Local News: Viewers can watch live newscasts as they happen, ensuring they stay up-to-date on breaking news, weather alerts, and local events.
- On-Demand Content: Missed a newscast or want to catch up on a specific story? The apps provide access to on-demand news segments, interviews, and special reports.
- Exclusive Stories: The apps also feature exclusive content not available on traditional broadcasts, providing deeper dives into local issues and investigations.
- Local Weather On-Demand: Need the latest weather forecast or want to track a developing storm? The apps offer up-to-the-minute weather information and interactive radar maps.
When Cord Cutters News contacted Nexstar about these changes, Nexstar did not respond to our original request for comment when these apps started to roll out.
Nexstar’s decision to offer free streaming apps for its local news stations reflects the company’s recognition of the evolving media landscape. As cord cutting continues and viewers increasingly embrace digital platforms, providing access to local news through streaming apps becomes crucial for maintaining viewership and community engagement.
The availability of these apps varies by market, as Nexstar is gradually rolling them out across its extensive network of local stations. Viewers can check their local station’s website or app store to see if the streaming app is available in their area.
The launch of these free streaming apps is a significant development in the local news landscape. By providing convenient and cost-free access to local news content, Nexstar is ensuring that viewers stay informed and engaged with their communities, regardless of their preferred viewing platform. This initiative also highlights the growing importance of digital platforms for local news organizations as they adapt to the changing media environment and seek to reach broader audiences.
As Nexstar continues to expand the availability of these apps and enhance their features, they are poised to become a valuable resource for many cord cutters looking for local news and weather coverage without needing to pay.
