The morphing grid might be getting a Disney+ makeover.

The duo behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, are in talks to write, produce, and serve as showrunners for a brand-new live-action Power Rangers series for Disney+, according to TheWrap. The series is being developed by Hasbro Entertainment and 20th Television, with a goal of reinventing the franchise for a whole new generation while still keeping longtime fans in mind.

For those who need a refresher, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted in the early ’90s, mashing up American teen drama with action footage from the Japanese series Super Sentai. The formula clicked, and the franchise has been morphing into new forms ever since, spanning over 25 seasons, multiple movies, and way too many color-coded suits to count.

Disney+ is no stranger to reboots and legacy brands, and this move follows a broader strategy from Hasbro to tap into its biggest IPs for premium TV. In fact, the company has multiple live-action and animated projects in the works across platforms including Clue, Magic: The Gathering, and Dungeons & Dragons, making it clear they’re going all-in on streaming.

The upcoming Power Rangers series isn’t the first attempt at a reboot. Lionsgate’s 2017 Power Rangers film tried a grittier YA approach but fell short at the box office, earning US$142 million on a reported US$100 million budget. Since then, Hasbro acquired the franchise in 2018 and has been reshaping its media ambitions, with this new Disney+ series being one of the biggest swings yet.

Steinberg and Shotz’s most recent project, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, has already wrapped its second season and was recently renewed for a third. Their past credits include FX’s The Old Man, and they’ve been producing under their company Quaker Moving Pictures at 20th Television since 2019.

No premiere date or casting news has been announced yet, but with Steinberg and Shotz potentially at the helm, Disney+ subscribers might want to keep an eye on the morphers. This could be the start of a whole new era for the Rangers and this time, it’s streaming!
