New Details on DIRECTV NOW’s DVR Beta & How You Could Be Selected For The Beta

A few weeks ago DIRECTV NOW made several announcements including plans to release a new app along with 4K support; however, the biggest news was AT&T’s plans to add a DVR to DIRECTV NOW.

AT&T said it would start the DVR beta this summer with a handful of testers and it would go public in the fall. Last week we started to hear from readers that they received an invitation to the beta. Now we have new details about the beta.

Thanks to two readers we can now confirm that a second batch of invites went out and a few details about how you become a member of the beta.

First, as expected, you need DIRECTV NOW. Second, you must also have an AT&T service because the beta uses your AT&T login. It seems that the beta will use a special app that only accepts AT&T user accounts.

According to the two beta testers we talked to the AT&T service they used was an AT&T wireless phone plan or an AT&T home internet account. We are not sure what other types of AT&T accounts will get you in but we can confirm these two right now.

Just getting this email does not guarantee you a spot. There is one more survey that asks what devices you would like to test the DVR on. Right now, it is asking for DVR beta testers who have an iOS device, Apple TV, Fire TV, or Chrome. (Note: It is possible not all of these are currently being tested but have beta tests planned for them.)

We can also confirm that this beta app is a totally new app. By the sounds of it this is the new DIRECTV NOW app we heard is on the way. Beta testers are being told they will still have access to the old DIRECTV NOW app also.
