Netflix is doubling down on its push into gaming, with plans to add party and couch co-op games to its streaming platform. This move, which aims to create a modern take on family game nights and TV game shows, was highlighted by Netflix’s co-CEO Gregory Peters during the company’s Q4 2024 earnings call.
The announcement, covered by Engadget, marks a significant step in Netflix‘s gaming strategy, which has made “good early progress” since its launch. Peters emphasized the company’s commitment to building on this foundation, noting that Netflix is continuing to invest in game streaming technology to expand its capabilities and reach.
The Rise of Netflix Gaming
Netflix’s strategy includes adding blockbuster titles like Grand Theft Auto, which has already seen tens of millions of downloads. The platform will also continue releasing games tied to its original content, a formula that has proven popular with fans.
For instance, Squid Game: Unleashed, based on the hit series, has topped app store charts for action games in 107 countries and is on track to become Netflix’s most downloaded game to date.
Peters noted that gaming is already contributing to subscriber acquisition and retention, though the impact remains relatively modest compared to Netflix’s core content. The company, however, sees gaming as a growing part of its ecosystem and plans to scale investments in this area accordingly.
A Modern Evolution of Shared Entertainment
The introduction of party and couch co-op games underscores Netflix’s vision of creating shared experiences for its users. Peters likened this new direction to “a successor to family board game night or an evolution of what the game show on TV used to be.”
With the addition of these features, Netflix aims to transform its gaming offering into a more interactive and social experience, providing new ways for families and friends to connect.
Netflix’s foray into gaming is still in its early stages, but the company’s commitment to expanding its offerings suggests it is positioning itself as a contender in the evolving entertainment landscape.
