Jinkies! For the first time in the franchise’s 55-year history, Scooby-Doo is going live-action for television and Netflix is the one pulling off the big reveal. The eight-episode series, set to stream exclusively on Netflix, takes fans back to the eerie case that first brought the gang together.

Half a century, three theatrical films, and more than a dozen animated series later, Scooby-Doo remains one of pop culture’s most beloved canines. But few have ever heard the chilling origin story of how Shaggy, Daphne, Velma, and Fred first met — or how a lonely Great Dane puppy became the center of a supernatural mystery.

In this modern reimagining, Shaggy and Daphne reunite during their last summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, where they team up with brainy Velma and charming newcomer Fred. What starts as a chance encounter with a lost pup soon spirals into a dangerous investigation that threatens to expose the gang’s deepest secrets.

The series comes from showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (Midnight Radio), with powerhouse producers Greg Berlanti (Berlanti Productions) and Warner Bros. Television. Berlanti, who fondly recalls working with Scooby creators Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera early in his career, calls the project “a story that captures their amazing spirits and genius creation.”

The History of Scoob

First debuting in 1969 with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! from creators Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the franchise introduced audiences to Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and their lovable Great Dane, Scooby-Doo. Traveling in their psychedelic van, the Mystery Machine, the gang tackled spooky cases that almost always ended with an unmasking and the now-iconic line about “meddling kids.” The format was an instant hit, drawing as much as 65% of Saturday-morning viewers in its early years.

Over the decades, Scooby-Doo has evolved through countless animated series, specials, and direct-to-video films, plus theatrical releases and live-action adaptations. Each version has tweaked the formula — giving Daphne martial arts skills in later years, for example — but the core mix of mystery, comedy, and friendship has kept it fresh for generations. The show’s influence even sparked a wave of similar “teen sleuth + mascot” cartoons in the 1970s, cementing Scooby-Doo’s place as one of the most enduring and imitated properties in animation history.

Why Netflix? Why Now?

Netflix has been leaning into live-action adaptations of fan favorites lately, from ONE PIECE to Avatar: The Last Airbender to Wednesday. Peter Friedlander, VP of scripted series at Netflix, says the goal is to honor the franchise’s universal themes of friendship while introducing a “new era of meddling kids” to audiences.

Warner Bros. Television’s Clancy Collins White agrees, noting that the new show will give a fresh generation the chance to discover Mystery Inc. for the first time.

With its mix of nostalgia, mystery, and a darker origin twist, Netflix’s live-action Scooby-Doo looks ready to capture longtime fans while luring in a new generation of viewers. Whether you grew up shouting “Zoinks!” or are just meeting the gang for the first time, this reimagined debut promises to bring all the chills, laughs, and unmaskings that have made Mystery Inc. an enduring part of pop culture.
