In a blockbuster move that folds mixed martial arts into its growing live-sports playbook, Netflix and Most Valuable Promotions are teaming up for an MMA superfight. Live from the Intuit Dome, on Saturday, May 16, UFC legend “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey takes on the “Face of MMA” Gina Carano in both fighters’ return to the sport.

The historic event pairs two generational figures for the first-ever live MMA broadcast on Netflix. Rousey, who helped legitimize women’s MMA in the UFC, and Carano, an early crossover star who helped raise the sport’s mainstream profile, are two icons going head-to-head for the first time in a professional, sanctioned MMA contest. The featherweight bout at 145lbs will be under Unified Rules with five 5-minute rounds and 4oz gloves. The full card will be announced at a later date, and all 300+ million Netflix subscribers can watch for no additional cost. Tickets go on sale Thursday, March 5, at Ticketmaster.

“Been waiting so long to announce this,” Rousey said in a statement. “Me and Gina Carano are gonna throw down in the biggest superfight in women’s combat sport history, and we’re partnering with the fighter-first promoter, MVP, as well as the baddest streamer on the planet, Netflix. This is for all MMA fans past, present, and future.”

“Ronda came to me and said there is only one person she would make a comeback for and it has been her dream to make this fight happen between us,” said Gina Carano. “She thanked me for opening up doors for her in her career and was respectful in asking for this fight to happen. This is an honor. I believe I will walk out of this fight with the win and I anticipate it will not come easy, which I welcome. This is as much for Ronda and me as it is for the fans and mixed martial arts community. What a time to be alive.”

Netflix has already leaned into boxing and celebrity events, most notably partnering with MVP on massive boxing cards (including the record-breaking Paul vs. Tyson event). The steamer has continued to add tentpole, live-sports spectacles to its lineup. Earlier this month, Netflix partnered with The Ring magazine for Tyson Fury’s return fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov in April. The upcoming comeback bout will be the first in the U.K. for the streamer and Fury.

Beyond combat sports, Netflix’s sports slate has expanded rapidly in recent years, including WWE rights, NFL games, and MLB broadcasts. Netflix reported massive viewership for WWE content (hundreds of millions of hours), which streamed reliably as a weekly tentpole, and helped reduce churn. For the previous two seasons, Netflix has aired NFL games on Christmas, turning the streamer into a destination for football fans. The platform is entering baseball’s rights landscape for 2026 with marquee MLB events (Home Run Derby, Opening Night, Field of Dreams content), emphasizing its multi-sport, year-round live strategy.

This spring, Netflix is rolling out Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano, bringing a legacy MMA fight to the platform. Instead of a typical nostalgia stunt, the streamer’s MMA debut is the opening bell to its next-phase sports strategy. The streaming giant has proved it can move enormous audiences with boxing, the NFL, and WWE. Now, with MMA in the mix, Netflix continues to show it’s a serious live-sports contender for cord cutters who want big-event viewing without traditional pay TV.
