Nearly 30% of HBO Now Subscribers Didn’t Make the Switch to HBO Max

Justice League HBO Max

AT&T launched HBO Max in May with hopes that HBO Now subscribers would shift to the new streaming service. A new report is showing that 29% of HBO Now subscribers have not made the switch.

Reelgood shared data from its 2 million+ users, showing that 71% of users who were HBO Now subscribers have upgraded to HBO Max as of July 2nd.

Those who have the ability to upgrade to HBO Max and continue streaming on their favorite device have good reason to do so. For the same $14.99 subscription cost, HBO Max users get more content, including originals, and a new interface with more features.

A major factor in subscribers not switching from the older app is the lack of availability of HBO Max on Roku and Amazon Fire TV. Without distribution deals made with the two largest streaming platforms in the country, many HBO viewers have no choice in how they stream their favorite series and movies.

We shared statements about negotiations from HBO Max, Amazon, and Roku in this post. While deals still haven’t been made, WarnerMedia’s direct-to-consumer Andy Forssell said that apps for both platforms have been developed and that when deals are made, the apps could be made available “minutes later.”
