The crime-themed channel Cloo, which launched in 2006 as the Sleuth channel, is now no more effective February 1. It will join the Oxygen and the Esquire channels as soon to be former channels of NBCUniversal.
Cloo carried mostly reruns of crime procedural dramas such as “Law & Order,” “Monk,” and “Psych.”
NBCUniversal is launching a new crime-focused channel, but it will be focused on real-life events not scripted dramas. A spokesperson from NBCUniversal said that the closing of Cloo has nothing to do with the new network launching to replace Oxygen.
It seems that NBC has no plans to replace Cloo and will just let the network go dark along with the Esquire network.
This change will affect both PlayStation Vue and DIRECTV NOW because both had been carrying the Cloo channel.
So in just the first weeks of 2017 three networks from NBCUniversal have shut down. The question now is not if more will shut down but when will more fall victim to the growing trend of cord cutting. In the day and age of Netflix the need for a network that airs nothing but reruns is quickly coming to an end.
