NBC Sports Just Became a Lot Less Cord Cutting Friendly

Over the weekend if you tried to watch the NASCAR race or The Open at Royal Birkdale on the NBC app, you may have been surprised to see it was unavailable on some devices. It seems NBC has made a change to how cord cutters can access some of their sports as a flood of our readers have told us.

In years past events on NBC, such as golf or NASCAR, would be streamed on the NBC Sports app even if you didn’t have that NBC local in your streaming service. Now it seems that has changed—at least for NASCAR and some golf events.

Over the weekend if you didn’t have the NBC channel in your PlayStation Vue or DIRECTV NOW subscription you would have received a message that you are unable to watch these events on the NBC Sports app for most streaming players.

So we reached out to PlayStation Vue customer service to find out why. According to PlayStation Vue customer support, these events are now only available on computers and mobile devices. They said devices, such as the Fire TV and Roku streaming players, would not be supported now for some sporting events.

This is a major change for NBC Sports and raises a question about other sports such as college football this fall.

For now if you run into an issue watching the events you want it seems as though you will need to watch it on your laptop or phone.

Cord Cutters News reached out to Sony yesterday for comment and at this time it has not replied to our request.
