NBC is Shutting Down Another TV Network

According to numerous sources, NBCUniversal will begin shutting down the LX network. Three years ago, the network debuted with a mission statement of “delivering views the stories you need with more sass and less suits.” Its content included live news, lifestyle programming, and documentaries, as well as covering politics, immigration, social justice, and climate change.

This news comes as NBC late last year shut down the struggling cable TV network G4 for a second time. In 2021 NBC ended its NBC Sports Network as it looked to focus its efforts on more successful networks.

LX focused most of its content towards providing audiences between the ages of 18 and 49 with 24/7 coverage of local stories. It originally started as a digital news network that widened its reach into both broadcasting and streaming services.

“LX News engages audiences with innovative storytelling that is personal, inspiring, and empowers YOU the viewer to take part in the conversation,” according to its website. “Our thought-provoking content highlights stories about tech, the environment, politics, community, social issues, and current events. Every LX News story is local connecting people to communities and to each other.”

Unfortunately, the news network did not stick the landing with younger audiences which contributed to its departure from NBCUniversal.

Deadline reports that “the nearly 40 workers affected by the move are being actively considered for new positions within NBCU.” There is no word yet on when exactly LX will go off the air, though sources speculate it will probably occur sometime during 2023.

They go on to say, “The network is distinct from the LX-branded production entity, which is remaining in the fold as a specialist in lifestyle programming, which it has supplied since NBC’s 2008 acquisition of startup LX.tv.”

NBCUniversal is cutting costs during an unpredictable economy, having also laid off employees throughout the company since the beginning of this year. Its parent company, Xfinity, has also cut NBC Sports Network as well as G4.

NBCUniversal has yet to release an official statement. Check back with Cord Cutters News as more information, including a yet to be scheduled final air date for LX, is disclosed.
