Starting today, September 1, 2025, MTV is turning back the clock, ditching reality TV for a week-long music video marathon across MTV2, MTV Live, and MTV Classic. The nostalgic move, announced by parent company Paramount, is a lead-up to the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on September 7, delighting Gen-X and millennial fans who miss the network’s music-driven glory days. But don’t get too comfortable—this throwback is a one-week event, leaving fans hopeful yet skeptical about a permanent return.
Dubbed an “unprecedented week of 24/7 music videos,” the initiative blends iconic videos from MTV’s past with today’s hits, curated by VMA winners and legendary MTV personalities. Each curator will showcase their seven favorite music videos, offering a personal dive into the visuals that shaped music culture. Paramount’s press release promises a rebellious, music-first vibe, aiming to recapture the raw energy of the 1980s and 1990s when MTV defined pop culture, while appealing to today’s streaming audience.
The shift comes after years of fan frustration over MTV’s pivot to reality TV staples like Laguna Beach, Teen Mom, The Hills, and Ridiculousness. With music videos largely exiled to YouTube, this temporary revival has sparked excitement on X, though its short duration has tempered expectations. “One week? Cool, but make it permanent,” one user posted.
Leading the charge is Van Toffler, a former MTV exec whose vision defined the network’s golden era. Known for iconic VMA moments like Beyoncé’s pregnancy reveal and the Madonna-Britney-Christina kiss, Toffler’s production company, Gunpowder & Sky, co-founded with Floris Bauer, has inked a multi-year deal with MTV and CBS. Partnering with Den of Thieves, Toffler is transforming the VMAs into a week-long, multiplatform spectacle. “This isn’t just a show—it’s a full-on music immersion,” Toffler said. Paramount co-CEOs Chris McCarthy and George Cheeks praised his knack for “delivering global moments that resonate.”
The 2025 VMAs will air live on CBS from New York’s UBS Arena on September 7, 8:00-11:00 P.M. EST, simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+. A one-hour live pre-show will also air across Paramount Media Networks.
