Classic cartoon enthusiasts in the Lower Rio Grande Valley have a new reason to celebrate as MeTV Toons, the all-animation broadcast network, officially launched on KRGV’s 5.5 subchannel in Weslaco, Texas, this week. The addition marks another milestone for MeTV Toons, which has been steadily expanding its over-the-air (OTA) presence since its debut in June 2024, bringing nostalgic animated favorites to audiences across the United States.
MeTV Toons, a joint venture between Weigel Broadcasting and Warner Bros. Discovery, specializes in classic animation, featuring beloved characters like Bugs Bunny, Scooby-Doo, Tom & Jerry, and The Flintstones. The network’s lineup spans decades, from Hollywood-era shorts to made-for-TV favorites, pulling from Warner Bros.’ extensive library, including Hanna-Barbera and pre-1986 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoons, alongside third-party series from NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures Television, WildBrain, and Shout! Studios. Since its launch, MeTV Toons has positioned itself as a haven for viewers seeking the golden age of animation, a promise that resonates strongly in markets like Weslaco, where access to diverse OTA programming is highly valued.
KRGV-TV, an ABC affiliate serving the Lower Rio Grande Valley, is owned by the Manship family through Mobile Video Tapes, Inc. The station, which has been a fixture in the region since 1954, operates its studios on East Expressway (I-2/US 83) in Weslaco, with its transmitter located in Santa Maria, Texas. Known for its commitment to local programming, KRGV has a history of evolving its offerings to meet community needs, as evidenced by its independent subchannel Somos El Valle on 5.3, which blends Spanish and English content. The addition of MeTV Toons on 5.5 further diversifies KRGV’s portfolio, catering to families and animation fans in a region where OTA television remains a primary source of entertainment for many households. MeTV can also be found on 5.4.
The launch of MeTV Toons on KRGV 5.5 comes at a time when the network is gaining traction nationwide. Available on OTA stations and streaming platforms like Frndly TV and Philo, MeTV Toons has tapped into a growing demand for nostalgic content, especially as viewers increasingly seek alternatives to subscription-based streaming services. For Weslaco residents, this addition means free access to a 24/7 lineup of classic cartoons, a boon for parents, children, and adults who grew up with these timeless shows.
