Meta announced today that it will soon start training AI using public content, like posts and comments on Facebook and Instagram, and user interactions with Meta AI.
Those who are using Meta products in the EU will soon get notifications explaining what information will be used and how it will be used. The company says it will not use private messages or content from users who are under 18. That said, if users are uncomfortable with the idea of their information being shared, Meta says there will also be a link to opt out.
“We believe we have a responsibility to build AI that’s not just available to Europeans, but is actually built for them,” the announcement says. “That’s why it’s so important for our generative AI models to be trained on a variety of data so they can understand the incredible and diverse nuances and complexities that make up European communities. That means everything from dialects and colloquialisms, to hyper-local knowledge and the distinct ways different countries use humor and sarcasm on our products. This is particularly important as AI models become more advanced with multi-modal functionality, which spans text, voice, video, and imagery.”
Meta notes that this training has been done in other regions since the launch of Meta AI. Because of legality questions in the EU, Meta AI only launched in the region last month and will only now start using public content for training.
