One of the biggest series right now is Paramount’s Yellowstone which has captivated audiences of diverse demographics everywhere as they follow the Dutton family drama on their modern day ranch in Montana. The Taylor Sheridan series has generated multiple spinoffs, including1883, 1932, and 6666, all contributing to the backstory of the flagship series.
With Amazon’s Prime Video upping its game to become a major player when it comes to original content, the studio’s newest series draws on similar notes from Yellowstone, most likely in an attempt to tap into some of that neo-Western genre that’s proved so successful for Paramount.
Outer Range has all the elements of a good TV series (and some that might hit a little too close to the Taylor Sheridan universe). For instance, the series is centered around a ranch in Wyoming, with the family fighting for their land, and a small town that’s full of tension. Check.
However, Prime Video is taking a twist with this one by adding some supernatural suspense to the mix, which could be a refreshing take on a wilderness Western. Instead of dealing with politicians like Yellowstone, Outer Range seems to be more on the mysterious and suspenseful side of things with plenty of paranormal activity.
The first season of Outer Range will consist of eight episodes, with two episodes premiering every week starting Friday, April 15 on Prime Video.
You can watch the trailer below.
Outer Range centers on Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness. A thrilling fable with hints of wry humor and supernatural mystery, Outer Range examines how we grapple with the unknown. At the onset of the series, the Abbotts are coping with the disappearance of daughter-in-law Rebecca. They are pushed further to the brink when the Tillersons (the gaudy owners of the neighboring profit-driven ranch) make a play for their land. An untimely death in the community sets off a chain of tension-filled events, and seemingly small-town, soil-bound troubles come to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts’ west pasture. Wild revelations unfold as Royal fights to protect his family; through his eyes, we begin to see how time contains secrets held in the past and unsettling mysteries foreshadowed.
