For the first time in months, less than half of Netflix’s new movies and TV shows will be Netflix originals in November 2018. This time only 42% of the new movies and TV shows are Netflix originals, down from 55% in October 2018.

This is a bit of a surprise because in September 2016, Netflix announced that they planned to make half of their catalog Netflix original movies and TV shows.

“It will take us a couple more years” to hit that target, Netflix CFO David Wells said back in 2016. “We’re a third to halfway to where we want to be. … We’ve got a ways to go” as the company looks for “a mixture of production models”—though not sports or ad-supported offerings.

The question now is will this be the start of a long-term trend of Netflix adding more non-Netflix originals or a short-term blip. Netflix seems dedicated to double down on original content. We will have to wait for their next move to see if the future is Netflix originals or a more balanced lineup.
