Predictions: Deals and Steals

Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham is projected to be the top pick and top overall prospect entering this year’s draft. The Detroit Pistons haven’t committed on rather or not they’re going to draft him or trade down and get more picks/players. Outside of Cunnigham, the consensus is that NBA G League Ignite’s Jalen Green and USC’s Evan Mobley round out the top-3 “can’t miss” players in this year’s draft.

Teams with enough capital to trade up to secure one of the 3 may be able to do so since Detroit is rumored to trade down. The Warriors are another team who may facilitate a trade since they have the 7th and 14th picks, and are rumored to be looking to add another star such as Ben Simmons, Damian Lillard, or Pascal Siakam. It would not be surprising if there is some sort of multi-team trade that allows a team to trade with Golden State and secure a top-3 pick.

Players to keep an eye on that may end up being steals include international phenoms Josh Giddey (Australia) and Alperen Sengun (Turkey). Both player’s draft stock has skyrocketed due to their high-level play overseas – Sengun was the 2021 Turkish League MVP and Giddey won the 2021 National Basketball League Rookie of the Year.

James Bouknight (UCONN), Davion Mitchell (Baylor), Jalen Suggs (Gonzaga), and Day’ron Sharpe (UNC) are four players that will have long-term success in the NBA. They all have high motors and their games should be able to translate with significant contribution to their teams. Suggs and Mitchell have tangibles that more-skilled players may not possess. Bouknight should be able to hit the ground running and in Sharpe’s case, he’ll probably get drafted in the second round but he has the skillset to be a solid big man in today’s game.
