All good things must come to an end, and the Big Wheel will have its last spin tonight under the watch of its long-tenured host. Pat Sajak will end his four-decade run as the host of Wheel of Fortune, America’s longest-running syndicated game show.
Since 1981, Sajak has been hosting what has become “America’s Favorite Game Show,” and has helped it become a staple of popular culture. Vana White, who joined the show in 1982 as a co-host, has extended her contract through the 2025-2026 season. White made headlines recently, after making her emotional goodbye to her long-time co-host.
Inspired by Hangman, since 1975, the Merv Griffin-created game show has been a viewing pleasure for millions of Americans across generations. Three contestants compete by spinning the Big Wheel for cash and prizes and guessing the letters and words in the puzzles.
With Sajak retiring, he is the last remaining old-school game show host on television. Many of his contemporaries include the late Alex Trebek (Jeopardy!), Bob Barker (The Price is Right), and Monty Hall (Let’s Make a Deal), who have been replaced by Ken Jennings, Drew Carey, and Wayne Brady, respectively. For Wheel, Sajak will be replaced by Ryan Seacrest, white White staying on for at least the first two seasons during this transition.
