Today, Moana 2 has set sail on Disney+ for its highly anticipated streaming debut. The animated feature was a massive theatrical success after making waves with a gross of over $1.05 billion globally. The story picks up three years after the original, with Moana and Maui teaming up to find the lost island of Motufetu and break an ancient curse.
For the sequel, Auliʻi Cravalho returns as Moana alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Maui, joined by new voices like Hualālai Chung, Rose Matafeo, and David Fane. The film broke records with a $221 million opening weekend and became the most-viewed Disney animated trailer, hitting 178 million views in 24 hours.
Director Dana Ledoux Miller, the first Pacific Islander woman to helm a major studio film, hinted that a third Moana film could explore the story of new character Matangi in an interview with Teen Vogue. A live-action Moana adaptation is also in development, set to bring the beloved tale to life with fresh perspectives. The Rock is reprising his role as Maui when the live-action film swims into theaters.
