Four victories will decide a new NBA champion as the Boston Celtics take on the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals. Beginning tonight at TD Garden Arena, the Eastern and Western Conference champions will go head-to-head in a best-of-seven series. Since 2002, ABC has broadcast the NBA Finals and will again this year.
The Mavericks last made an NBA Finals trip in 2011, in which, they defeated LeBron James and the Miami Heat to capture their first Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. Head coach Jason Kidd, who played on that 2011 team, has led this new generation of Mavs back to the champion series. The dynamic duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving has made the Western Conference champions and No. 5 seed hard to stop due to their offensive skills. The Mavs have also seen big contributions from their bench and role players, including mid-season acquisitions P.J. Washington (acquired from the Charlotte Hornets) and Daniel Gafford (acquired from the Washington Wizards).
In 2008, the Boston Celtics won their 17th championship, which ties them with the LA Lakers for most all-time. This will be their third NBA Finals appearance since then and the second with the longtime duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. In 2022, Brown, Tatum, and the Celtics were defeated by the Golden State Warriors, 4-2, in the championship series. This year’s team is revamped with additional pieces of former Maverick and Doncic teammate Kristaps Porzingis, and NBA champion Jrue Holiday, which helped push Boston to the top seed of the Eastern Conference.
