Basketball returns to the international stage during the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. Sponsored by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), stars from across the world will come together to represent their country with a chance to win a gold medal.

This year’s tournament is the 19th edition and for the first time, it’ll be hosted by multiple nations (Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines). 32 teams are set to take the floor in a grueling 48-game tournament that is set to begin on Friday, August 25, and reach its conclusion on Sunday, September 10.

As always, FIBA serves as massive stakes with a trip to France on the line for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Each top team from Africa, Oceania, and Asia will secure their ticket to Paris, as will host country France for the 2024 Summer Games. Joining them will be the two top teams from the Americas and Europe.

Notable Players

Basketball fans will witness many familiar faces at this year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup, with NBA superstars including Canada’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (OKC Thunder, Jamal Murray (Denver Nuggets), and Dillion Brooks (Houston Rockets); France’s Rudy Gobert (Minnesota Timberwolves), Nic Batum (LA Clippers), and Evan Fournier (New York Knicks); the Dominican Republic’s Karl-Anthony Towns (Minnesota Timberwolves); and Australia’s Josh Giddey (OKC Thunder), Patty Mills (Atlanta Hawks), and Josh Green (Dallas Mavericks).

Spain raised the gold at the end of the 2019 tournament, but many are wondering how Team USA will respond after not medaling during the last outing. Unlike the 2019 team, this year’s Team USA will feature many of the NBA’s rising stars and former All-Stars, including Paolo Banchero (Orlando Magic), Jalen Brunson (New York Knicks), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), and Brandon Ingram (New Orleans Pelicans).
