Conference Championship Weekend in college football has finally arrived. This Friday and Saturday, 10 conference champions will be decided on the gridiron which will have massive ramifications heading into the 2022 College Football Playoffs. From Group of Five conferences (American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, Mid-American Conference, Mountain West Conference, and Sun Belt) to the Power Five conferences (Big Ten, ACC, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC) this weekend’s games could make-or-break hopes of a national championship.

Heading into this weekend’s matchups, Georgia, Michigan, Alabama, and Cincinnati are the top 4 teams in the College Football Playoffs rankings, respectively. Georgia and Alabama are facing off in the SEC Championship Game, if Alabama gets blown out then they will likely not make the CFP. Cincinnati will have to defeat a tough Houston team in the American championship game if they want to stay in the top 4. Michigan will need to secure the Big Ten Championship to solidify its case for the CFP. Of the top 4 teams, Georgia may be the safest bet to make the CFP even if the Crimson Tide beat them in the SEC title game due to their strength of schedule and having 0 losses up to that point.

If (5) Oklahoma State wins the Big 12 title game and Michigan, Alabama, or Cincinnati lose then the Cowboys have a legit chance at making the playoffs. Things get tricky for (6) Notre Dame and (7) Ohio State.

As an independent, Notre Dame doesn’t play in a conference and won’t be playing this weekend. Earlier this year, they lost to Cincinnati, which the CFP panel may take under consideration and not put the Fighting Irish ahead of the Bearcats if Cincinnati doesn’t win the American.

For the Buckeyes, they’re not competing in the Big 10 title game, they have 2 losses, which includes a 42-27 dragging by the hands of Michigan, and an early-season loss to Oregon. Mountains would have to be moved for Ohio State to jump back in the top 4, even if Cincinnati, Alabama, or Michigan were to lose this weekend.
