How to Get a Year of Hulu for Just $30

Hulu_logoHulu is the third-largest streaming service in the United States with about 9 million subscribers, 500 content partners, and over 700 million hours of streamed content.

Over the last few months we have been seeing comments about Hulu gift cards being sold on eBay and Amazon for a fraction of the face value: some 12-month Hulu gift cards have been going for just $30. We decided to test them out.

We purchased three different Hulu gift cards from Amazon.com: two 12-month gift cards and one 6-month gift card. All the gift cards advertised digital delivery by Amazon message within 24 hours of payment clearing.

The two 12-month Hulu gift cards were delivered within a few hours of payment. We followed the instructions: go to Hulu.com/Gift, login, and enter the gift card number sent to us in our email. Sure enough both of them applied for a full year. We now have Hulu paid for until March 2018.Hulu Gift CardsWe already had our account set to limited commercials and even though the ad says commercial-free plan our account is still limited commercials.

The 6-month gift card failed to show up. After 24 hours we contacted the seller to ask when/if we would receive the card, but we still haven’t had a response.

Update: We have now heard from the seller of the 6 month gift card after we contacted them. They apologized and upgraded us to a 12 month gift card.

So two out of three, and we have faith that if we started a complaint with Amazon we would get our money back, but it raised the question are these official gift cards?

We honestly do not know Hulu’s position on these gift cards. We contacted Hulu for comment, but Hulu has yet to reply. All the sellers claim the same thing: they buy the cards in bulk and are Hulu gift card resellers.

So for now all we can say is the Hulu gift cards worked for us, and we are unsure of Hulu’s position on them. Hulu must know about these gift cards because they have been around for some time and Hulu does not seem to be moving to block their sale. If you choose to try this make sure to buy from a reputable place like eBay or Amazon in case one of the sellers does not follow through on the sale.

With that said, we always recommend the rule of “If it sounds to good to be true it probably is…”

Update #2 I have been contacted by people who say they have heard from “other people” that these cards are purchased with stolen credit cards. I did find this email that was supposedly sent to one user of these gift cards from Hulu.

Hi,

I’m writing to notify you that we have cancelled the Hulu subscription attached to your email address. I’d love to explain why your account was cancelled, and maybe we can work together on this to figure a few things out. And let me first apologize for all the trouble and confusion.

We received a contact from someone who had seen fraudulent charges made on their credit card. Someone had stolen their information and used it to purchase gift subscriptions. When this occurs, we are obligated to refund all of the charges and invalidate the items that were bought with them. The gift subscription you redeemed was one of these fraudulently purchased subscriptions. As such, we gave the money back to the person whose card was used and had to cancel your account.

So now we need to figure out what to do next. For my part, I would love to know how you came across this gift code. If it was a gift to you, who gave it to you? Was this a purchase from eBay? If so, could you provide the account you purchased it from? If this was a PayPal transaction, what email address was tied to the PayPal account you purchased it from? If you can help us figure out these details, it could help track down the original fraudulent purchaser.

If you purchased this in a way that seemed to be perfectly legitimate, please let us know. We also recommend going back to that vendor and registering a fraud complaint with them. This is not unlike purchasing goods that were originally stolen. I assume at this point that you had no idea you were doing it, but it was still illegally purchased originally.

Your cooperation and help on this would be greatly appreciated, as of right now we’re in the dark about what happened with these subscriptions after the point of purchase.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Hulu Support

Again “If it sounds to good to be true it probably is…”

Update #3

After a week still no word from Hulu but we see the cards are still for sale on Amazon/eBay and have been for months.
