Study Reveals the Top Online Movie Rental Services




amzn_roku_grid_fullDigitalsmiths, a Tivo-owned research company, has posted their quarterly reports on consumer-viewing habits. This study is posted every quarter since 2012, and they just came out with the 2015 third quarter study that lists the top Pay-Per-Rental Services in the United States.

The list looked at both physical in-person rentals and digital online rentals that are paid for in a pay-per-rental format so no subscription services, like Netflix or Amazon Prime, were included in this part of the study.

Overall Redbox Kiosks were the number 1 movie rental platform when looking at both physical in-store rentals and online digital rentals. Redbox accounted for 15.8% of all movie rentals in the United States during the third quarter of 2015.

Amazon Prime was the number 1 movie rental service when looking at just digital movie rentals with 15.4% of all movie rentals. iTunes came in second with 7.7%, followed by Google Play at 4.7% of all movie rentals both physical and digital.

Here are the top seven online movie rental services in the United States. (Note the percentages are based on both physical and digital rentals.)

  1. Amazon: 15.4%
  2. iTunes: 7.7%
  3. Google Play: 4.7%
  4. YouTube Movies: 2.3%
  5. Vudu: 1.6%
  6. Flixter: 1%
  7. CinemaNow: 0.8%

Almost all of the major movie rental services saw a loss in market share in the third quarter of 2015 compared to the second quarter because newer services, like Sling TV, take market share as the Pay-Per-Rental market continues to become more clouded.

iTunes saw the biggest decrease, falling from 9.3% of all movie rentals in the second quarter 2015 to 7.7% of all movie rentals in the third quarter 2015. Amazon fell from 15.6% to 15.4%. Even physical movie rentals saw a decrease from 18.1% at Redbox to just 15.8% in the third quarter 2015.

In total, 70% of all Americans say they use a pay-per-rental service rather than a physical or digital service. This is a slight decline compared to the second quarter 2015.
